Zimbabwe - the facts

Formerly Southern Rhodesia, Zimbabwe lies landlocked between Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana and South Africa on a high, open plateau with a good climate and reasonable soil, ideal for farming.

Rich in minerals - coal, chromium ore, asbestos, gold, nickel, copper and iron ore.

Rich in wildlife and tourist attractions such as the spectacular Victoria Falls.

However:
  • 70% of the population is unemployed
  • Food Production is 15% of potential
  • Average life expectancy is 37
  • 33% of the population are HIV positive
The Diocese of Central Zimbabwe is led by Bishop Ishmael, a practical man of sincerity and integrity, truly committed to work with the people of his Diocese for a better future.

The Diocese has one major project which is to build St Patrick's Hospital which is 30km north of Gweru and this project is being supported by the Croydon / Zimbabwe Link.

Other Diocesan projects include:
  • HIV / Aids work - supporting care workers in the community
  • Schools - 3 primary and 1 secondary
  • Supporting priests in training

The Croydon / Zimbabwe Link is a two-way thing. Our support can make a difference to them, and they have much to teach us.
