Holy Week and Easter in the Benefice

Celebrating Christ – Holy Week and Easter in the Benefice

We share the pain and the joy of Christ’s journey from Palm Sunday’s entry to Jerusalem, through the recalling of his betrayal, his trial and execution and back to the triumph and joy of his resurrection on Easter Day.

We encourage everyone to join us in this journey and experience something of the emotional highs and lows through a variety of worship.

Palm Sunday 14 April

This is a joyful service that celebrates the arrival of Christ in Jerusalem – the Messiah that had come to set the Israelites free from their captives.  We begin at St Augustine’s, journey to St Peter’s (via Brighton Road Baptist Church) and continue the story of Christ’s passion together, hopefully, with our friends from the United Church and the Croydon Sign Church.

09:30 Gather at St Augustine’s for coffee and pastries, and warm our voices

10:00 The service begins with the Liturgy of the Palms – our palm crosses are blessed – a short act of worship to send us out with joy.

10:20 Procession leaves for St Peter’s

11:00 (estimate) we arrive at St Peter’s and enter the church to continue the worship with the Liturgy of the Passion and the Sung Eucharist

18:30  Evening Worship at St Peter’s

Tuesday of Holy Week 16 April

20:00 Stations of the Cross, Tenebrae style –

This service takes us through some of the Stations of the Cross, moving slowly from a fully lit church into darkness as we approach and experience Christ’s death.  It is a service of reading, prayer and reflection and offers the opportunity to understand more deeply the sadness of Christ’s death.  As we move around the church, our steps are lit by candles.

Wednesday of Holy Week 17 April

10:00 Holy Communion at St Peter’s

20:00 Taize style worship at St Augustine’s.

If you have never experienced this, we recommend you join us.  The church is lit by about 400 candles ready for a meditative and prayerful service and the atmosphere is helped by the singing of Taize chants.

Maundy Thursday 18 April

20:00 at St Peter’s

We recall the events of the last supper and accept Christ’s hospitality by sharing bread and wine. This service may include the ritual of footwashing, where the priests have the opportunity to reflect on their commitment to serve the community by taking on the task of washing the feet of the congregation. This is a symbolic gesture, in reality we pour a little warm water over the top surface of the foot and then dry it off.

Following the Eucharist, the sanctuary is stripped in silence and we remain in silent vigil until the service ends with night prayer at around 21:45

Good Friday 19 April

10:20 Procession of Witness from Nottingham Road to the almshouses and an act of worship in the town centre.

14:00 Devotional Service with choral music at St Augustine’s.  We are led through a service of music, prayer and reflection during which the congregation are invited to bring the nail they have carried with them during Holy Week to the cross.

Easter Sunday 21 April

08:00 Said Holy Communion service at St Peter’s

09:30 Festival Eucharist at St Augustine’s, where the Paschal Candles will be lit.

11:00 Festival Eucharist at St Peter’s
